Trujillo Basin Petroleum Systems
Baseline Resolution & GSI

The Trujillo Basin is one of several northern Peruvian forearc basins.  Located offshore west of the coastal regions of La Libertad and Ancash, it is a NW-SE elongate depression occupying approximately 9,000 km2 over the continental shelf and slope.  It is separated by basement highs from the Salaverry Basin to the east and the offshore extension of the Sechura Basin to the north.  The basin is thought to be filled with Cenozoic and Mesozoic sediments that exceed 7km thickness in depocenters.

The Trujillo basin contains four exploration wells.  The first two, Delfin and Ballena, were drilled by Occidental in 1971.  The Morsa Norte and Lobos wells were drilled by Repsol in 1999.  Although none of the drilled wells resulted in a commercial discovery, they showed evidence of reasonable reservoir potential.  Oil shows in the Morsa Norte and Lobos wells confirm the presence of generative hydrocarbon source rocks in the basin.  The existence of an active petroleum system is also indicated by numerous oil seeps in the form of sea surface slicks, which have been geochemically correlated to Lower Cretaceous source rocks based on analogues from other Peruvian basins.  Basin models suggest that these source rocks have been buried deeply enough to generate significant quantities of hydrocarbons.  In some of the deep basin grabens, potential Eocene source rocks may be a secondary hydrocarbon source.
