Pisco Basin Petroleum Systems
Baseline Resolution & GSI
The Pisco Basin occurs both on- and offshore along the south central coast of Peru, southeast of the Lima Basin and northwest of the Mollendo Basin. The entire basin area covers approximately 27,240 square km, and is located in an extensional tectonic framework dominated by continental margin activity, very close to the Peruvian trench and the Nazca Ridge.
The basin is usually discussed in terms of East Pisco and West Pisco Basins, separated by an outer shelf basement high. The eastern portion of the Pisco Basin is located both onshore and offshore (shelf), while the adjacent western area is located entirely offshore (slope). Recent work (Petrotech, 2004) argues that there is evidence for only one basin, as a separating high is only insinuated. Discussions of a single Pisco Basin vs. East and West Pisco Basins in the current report will follow the format and context of the references from which they are taken.
Exploration activity has consisted primarily of regional seismic surveys, a remote sensing survey, and a sea bottom piston core survey. Only one well, the Pisco 4-X-1 has been drilled in the area since the 1950’s. There were no shows in the Pisco 4-X-1, and it was plugged and abandoned. The only other drilling activity was a part of ODP leg 112, which drilled several wells in the area, primarily to the northwest in the area of the Lima Basin.
