Introduction

This study was conceived to provide a basic geochemical database for the northwestern Colorado area. The primary focus is on the Pennsylvanian Belden section although possible source beds from other Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks are included as well. Outcrop samples with reported oil shows and numerous produced crude oils from fields in northwest Colorado and surrounding areas are also analyzed. Although the study is not intended to be a comprehensive regional evaluation of northwestern Colorado, integration with some geological data was necessary to provide a framework on which geochemical interpretation could be made.

Subscribers are encouraged to develop this theme on their own and for this study to achieve its purpose, it is essential that this be done. The full value of this study can never be attained unless it is fully integrated with regional geology.

The report is divided into two volumes. In all, samples from twenty-four wells, one hundred and thirty-seven outcrops, and twenty-seven crude oils are included. Geochemical logs were produced on ten of the wells. A complete listing of the samples analyzed and the number and types of analyses performed is shown on Table 1-1. Sample locations are plotted on the three index maps (Figure 1-1 through 1-3). More detailed listings are provided in each data section.
